Minster's Statement on Marijuana Ruling
I would like to share with you a message from the Minister of Health, Rona Ambrose, regarding the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on marijuana.

Earlier this week Health Canada moved to meet the requirements dictated by the Supreme Court of Canada regarding marijuana.

Health Canada is doing so in a manner that respects the rule of law, protects public health and public safety, and reflects the serious health risks with marijuana, especially for youth.

This is in stark contrast to Justin Trudeau’s irresponsible Liberal scheme to legalize marijuana and make it available in stores just like alcohol and cigarettes. Storefronts selling marijuana are illegal and under this Conservative Government will remain illegal.

Canadian courts have once again required government to allow access to marijuana when authorized by a physician, sidestepping the Health Canada evidence-based medical review process. Marijuana is neither an approved drug nor medicine in Canada and Health Canada does not endorse its use.

All proposed medical treatments need to meet strict Health Canada requirements so patients can be sure they are safe and effective. If serious researchers are interested in investigating potential benefits of marijuana derivatives such as oils, clinical trials are the appropriate path to ensure the effectiveness and safety of any new treatment.

The evidence is clear that when youth smoke marijuana they have increased risks of mental health issues including psychosis and schizophrenia.

While Justin Trudeau wants to legalize marijuana making it easier for youth to buy and smoke, this Conservative Government does not support making access to illegal drugs easier.

According to the Canadian Drug Use Monitoring Survey, marijuana use by youth has dropped by almost 45% since 2004 thanks to this Conservative Government’s efforts to educate families. This same survey reported that while 20% of youth smoked marijuana in 2012, 70% drank alcohol. Regulating marijuana in the same manner as alcohol could mean tripling its use by youth.

As Health Minister, it is very disappointing to see marijuana continue to be normalized for youth by Justin Trudeau, who also wants to allow and expand home grow operations in neighbourhoods.

This Conservative Government will continue to protect the health and safety of Canadians and remain deeply opposed to Justin Trudeau’s irresponsible scheme to legalize and normalize marijuana for youth.

Hon. Rona Ambrose PC MP
Minister of Health

Kelly Block is HWMR Candidate
The Humboldt-Warman-Martensville-Rosetown (HWMR) Conservative Electoral District Association is pleased to announce that Kelly Block will be the Conservative Party of Canada’s candidate in the riding of HWMR for the next federal general election.

Kelly Block, who is currently the Member of Parliament for Saskatoon-Rosetown-Biggar, will be a strong, high-profile candidate for the Conservative Party in HWMR. Kelly Block has been a Member of Parliament since 2008 and has won two closely contested elections by working diligently both prior to and during the election period.

The riding of HWMR was created in 2013 by the Saskatchewan Boundary Commission which redrew the riding boundaries of all 14 ridings in the province. The riding of HWMR will officially come into existence at the commencement of the 42nd general election to be held in the fall of 2015.
